You should only\u00a0participate\u00a0in surf and bodyboarding sessions at The Wave with a full understanding of the risks and the steps you can take to\u00a0minimise\u00a0them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The minimum age to\u00a0participate\u00a0in these sessions is 6 years old and all participants must be able to swim 25m unaided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"font-poppins font-extrabold uppercase text-lg text-zodiac-500 pb-1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Types of Injuries<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"text-base\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Most surfing injuries are not serious. The main cause of injury is contact with a surfer\u2019s own board or someone else\u2019s board. Injuries can also result from contact with the lake floor, which\u00a0is made\u00a0of concrete. It is important to follow all instructions on how to safely dismount your surfboard to avoid contact with the lake floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-base\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The most common types of surfing injuries are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">\n<p class=\"text-base\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cuts and scrapes, sprains and bruises to the head, face, shoulder and arm.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">\n<p class=\"text-base\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Injuries to feet and ankles\u00a0as a result of\u00a0jumping from surfboards in shallow water.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\">\n<p class=\"text-base\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Overuse injuries such as repetitive strain of the neck and rotator cuff tendonitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\">\n<p class=\"text-base\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cramp.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"1\">\n<p class=\"text-base\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fatigue and exhaustion. Tiredness can diminish your reaction time and increase the risk of accident.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"7\" data-aria-level=\"1\">\n<p class=\"text-base\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sun Burn.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text-base\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although most injuries are not serious, surfing also carries the risk of fractures, dislocations, severe injuries to the head, neck or back or other injuries that may result in permanent disability and death.\u00a0A previous\u00a0injury, for example to your knee or shoulder, can increase your chance of sustaining a\u00a0subsequent\u00a0injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"font-poppins font-extrabold uppercase text-lg text-zodiac-500 pb-1\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW20297933 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW20297933 BCX0\">Preventing Surf Injuries<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are steps you can take to\u00a0minimise\u00a0the chances of sustaining an injury whilst surfing or bodyboarding at The Wave.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"8\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Watch our Health and Safety briefing and follow all the instructions of the instructors and lifeguards.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"9\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Warm up thoroughly before your surf or bodyboard session.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"10\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you cramp up, stay calm and signal for help from one of our lifeguards.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"11\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wear\u00a0good quality\u00a0waterproof sunscreen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"12\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before surfing or bodyboarding check all your equipment for damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"13\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be aware of your environment and other people in the lake.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"14\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be honest with yourself about your ability and\u00a0chose\u00a0the right session for your fitness level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"15\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Listen to your body. If you are tired, take a break.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"16\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dismount your surfboard safely. Never jump off your board feet first. Follow all the instructions of the surf coaches on how to safely fall, including falling backwards like a starfish into deeper water where possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"17\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you fall off your board, always cover your head and face with your arms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"18\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We recommend wearing a helmet. Helmets are compulsory for all under 18s and all surfers in\u00a0the Beginner\u00a0Bay. Whilst no helmet can protect the wearer against all potential injuries, the use of a helmet will\u00a0provide\u00a0extra protection to your head and face.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"19\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Follow the Surfing Etiquette set out below.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"20\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you have any questions \u2013 ask!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"font-poppins font-extrabold uppercase text-lg text-zodiac-500 pb-1\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW38829942 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW38829942 BCX0\">Surfing Etiquette<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"21\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Respect the rights of other surfers and bodyboarders in the water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"22\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be aware that other surfers and bodyboarders in your session may have varying skill levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"23\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be patient.\u00a0Wait\u00a0for your wave. Don\u2019t drop in on someone else.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"24\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Don\u2019t ditch your board. Always wear your leash and try to\u00a0maintain\u00a0control of your board to avoid it hitting you or someone else.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"25\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you fall, cover your face and head until your board is under control. Once you have control of your board, safely move out of the way of other surfers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"26\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Don\u2019t get in the way. These sessions are open to people of all ages, perfect for having fun with a bodyboard or just jumping in the shallows with your little ones. To minimise the risk of injury, we do not allow any surfboards in the Beginner Bay during this session. However, Play in the Bay customers should be aware that surfboards are permitted in the Reef area of the lake and whilst we will have a host in the water at the boundary between the Bay and the Reef to minimise the chance of any surfboards accidentally entering the Bay area, there is a chance that a surfboard could enter the Beginner Bay.<\/p>\n<p>All children aged 8 and under must have an adult in the water with them on a ratio of 1:1. Children aged 9-15 years old must\u00a0be actively supervised\u00a0by an adult, although this doesn\u2019t have to be in the water.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"font-poppins font-extrabold uppercase text-lg text-zodiac-500 pb-1\"><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"font-poppins font-extrabold uppercase text-lg text-zodiac-500 pb-1\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW39352412 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW39352412 BCX0\">Types of Injuries<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW39352412 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Whilst the risk of injury during a Play in the Bay session is low and\u00a0additional\u00a0measures have\u00a0been taken\u00a0to make the session as safe as possible for our youngest customers, we cannot\u00a0entirely\u00a0eliminate\u00a0all risks.<\/p>\n<p>The most common types of injury during a Play in the Bay session are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cuts and scrapes, sprains and bruises to the head, face, shoulder, arm, legs and feet.<\/li>\n<li>Cramp.<\/li>\n<li>Sun Burn.<\/li>\n<li>Cold exposure and in extreme cases, hypothermia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The main cause of injury is through trips and falls, contact with your own bodyboard or someone else\u2019s bodyboard. In\u00a0very rare\u00a0circumstances, a more\u00a0serious injury\u00a0could\u00a0be sustained\u00a0if you collide with a customer on a surfboard who has accidentally entered\u00a0the Beginner\u00a0Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Although most injuries are not serious, participation in a Play in the Bay session also carries the risk of fractures, dislocations, or more severe injuries that may result in permanent disability and in extremely rare circumstances, death. Customers should also be mindful of the moderate current running along the channel and the risk of drowning, particularly for young children. Therefore, we ask that all children under the age of 9 are\u00a0accompanied\u00a0in the water by an adult. Do not run in the lake or on the shore. Always enter the lake by walking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"36\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Attend the pre-session Health and Safety briefing and follow all the instructions of the instructors and lifeguards.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"37\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Stay alert and always remain close to children in your care.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"38\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Warm up thoroughly before your session.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"39\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Look out for the signs of cold exposure and hypothermia, particularly in little ones. Wear a wetsuit to help\u00a0retain\u00a0heat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"40\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you cramp up, stay calm and signal for help from one of our lifeguards.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"41\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be aware of your environment and other people in the lake.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"42\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Listen to your body. This will\u00a0be emailed\u00a0to you in advance, we strongly recommend that you complete it before you arrive on site to make the check-in process as smooth as possible. A parent or legal guardian must complete the Acknowledgement of Risk and Waiver on behalf of all participants under the age of 18.
